A good introductory race track set

My 4 yr. old son is obsessed with his cars and trucks and especially with the Cars movie. He's constantly racing his growing collection of cars and trucks around the house and I began to think that he might enjoy having a track to race them on. My husband has fond memories of the Hot Wheels track he had when he was a boy and suggested to some friends and family that that might make a good gift for him. He did receive a couple of different Hot Wheels tracks, but they proved to be too complicated and difficult for my son to set up and run by himself and my husband was afraid that constantly buying batteries would prove to be quite expensive.After doing some research, I finally settled on this Cars Lightning Fast Speedway Track Set. I knew it would only work with his diecast cars from the Cars movie and not with the smaller Hot Wheels cars, but I figured it would be a good way to introduce him to using a race track with his cars and we could worry about getting a track for his Hot Wheels cars when he's older. Besides I knew that he would love it, because he loves the Cars movie so much.I was right. This was definitely the right track for my son right now. It's one piece which means there are no complicated track pieces for him to figure out how to assemble and for him to scatter all over the house. It also folds up which makes it easy to store and move around. The on/off switch is a bit stiff but he can do it by himself. He can also place the cars on the start ramp by himself and he loves to watch them race around the track. He also loves when the crash in the middle. The track works best with 2 cars at a time, but it also works reasonably well with 3 or 4 cars at a time as long as the batteries are fresh. The only thing that doesn't seem to work as advertised is the hand pedal to increase or decrease speed. It doesn't seem to really do anything at all when he pushes it down or pulls it up, but my son doesn't seem to care about this at all. He just likes to watch the cars race and crash.Not all of the Cars diecast vehicles work on this track. The ones that are designed as race cars work great - Lightning, Chick, King, Doc etc. Some of the cars that aren't race cars but have a similar shape also work fairly well - Sally, Sheriff etc. - though they sometimes get a little hung up on their way around the track and slow things down or crash. The other characters such as Mater, Filmore, Ramone, Luigi, Guido, Red etc. don't work at all. However, that doesn't seem to bother my son much. He just turns the motor off and races them around the track by hand. He races his Hot Wheels and Tonka Town trucks around the track by hand as well.Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and I believe my son is too. He's played with it every day since he received it over a week ago, and I haven't had to replace the batteries yet - though I think they are slowing down a bit now. I definitely reccommend this track set to any child 3-5 yrs old who's not ready for a traditional Hot Wheels track and who loves the Cars movie and cars.

Great for younger Cars fans!

The Lightning Fast Speedway is a smaller, portable track than the Piston Cup Track Set. My son is 3, loves Cars and is really enjoying this track. It is short and fun with the crossing point providing some pretty big crashes. These Die Cast Cars are sure tough.The track comes with a Lightning McQueen die cast car that is identical to the normal Lightning die cast. As my son had just lost his Lightning, having this one included with the track was perfect. Many of the cars work very well with the track (especially the actual racing cars: Lightning, Chick, King, Leakless, Dinoco McQueen, Doc, and Nitroade. Some cars don't work well.The motor works pretty well, but is not perfect. It does not have problems like those that have been reported with the Piston Cup Track, but it is not perfect. There are times we need to spin the wheels manually to get the motor to engage and other times that I need to turn it off and on a couple of times. That said, it has never failed to run.The product description refers to pumping the hand pedal for fast racing. I have not found pumping to do anything, but the wheel does spin faster (and the cars do go faster) when the pedal is pushed all the way down.All told, we are very happy with this toy. It is a great addition to our Cars collection.

My son recived this toy from Santa. Well, lets just say he did'nt want to open any of his other presents. He played with this fun toy for hours. Actually we ALL played with this. I love that it is sooo easy to use. He is only 2 and he knew exactly what to do. The cars move really fast on this track. The race cars are the best. But, we even got some of his matchbox cars to work. We play the game of "who will work" we line all of his cars up and we have a good pile and a bad pile. He laughs when ever one fly's off the track- and let me tell you some go flying! This is a really cool toy. Whenever Pawpaw is over that is the first toy they must play with. I would reccomend for any little guy who is into cars.
